I stumbled across this book while searching for books on sailing. It promised to be funny (always a plus when reading about adventure, no need to take yourself too seriously!) and the clincher for me was that the author did not even want to sail. Out of all the books I had been looking at this was the one that spoke to my soul! And not just because her adventure starts with a stranger in a bar and a one night stand that sort of, well, defeats the whole purpose of having a one night stand. Although with a beginning like that how could I not want to read the book. If she replaced a sailboat with a motorcycle and an Argentinian with a German, she would have had the start of Patrick and me. So yes, that helped me fall for the story right away. But much more importantly, this was the first book I had found where the author was not starting out on a dream about to be fulfilled. In fact, she was terrified. And not just the normal jitters before heading out on an adventure. This was a woman who was afraid of the ocean. Because the ocean is scary. And since I too am a potential but reluctant sailor, I loved the very idea that a book existed that dealt with my very fears.

What really made me fall madly in love with her writing (and has elevated her to my new number one girl crush) was her honest approach to the fear of going on an adventure (and that applies to any and all adventures, as can be witnessed on her blog). The book was about sailing but you could easily replace “boat” with “bike” or “train” or “plane” or any other number of scary adventure endeavours. In fact, I have Patrick reading it now and the first thing he said to me about it was how easily this book could be about motorcycle adventures, especially how everyone tells you how dangerous it is and that to go on such a trip is practically, if not flat out, suicidal. Everyone that is except for the people who have done it, who all encourage you to “go for it” and have the time of your life.

So if you are looking for a fun read that still manages to address the very real issues of chasing a dream and going on an adventure,you can not go wrong with this book!

Arif and I met during our Masters program at the university of Hoehenheim and quickly bonded over our shared love of motorcycles.

Patrick’s brother Jannick has a giant Asado every year in Switzerland. In 2010 we went with our motorcycles and I invited Arif along. (Jannick and Patrick did a 6 week motorcycle trip in Argentina after Patrick’s first world trip and they fell in love with Asado. So much so that Jannick held an annual one every summer, full animal carcasses in all, up until 2 years ago in fact.)

Why did he stop? Because he went on a world trip on his motorcycle with us. Whereas ours ended after a year, Jannick continued on to Australia, where it turned out Arif had moved to after graduation. And so Jannick and his girlfriend spent a couple of days there before they continued onto Japan.

We all know that a women should be listened to, as we are almost always right. Well in this case it was the absolute truth. I have a strong belief in my intuition. Whenever I have ignored it in the past it has returned only to bite me on the ass. In the case of this night I just had a weird feeling about camping wild. It was the first night we had a chance to camp wild thus far on the trip. So I honestly thought that perhaps I was blowing things out of proportion. The first place we looked at just felt bad. So we continued on. The second place Patrick checked out on foot and declared perfect. To the point where he was willing to drive Jacqueline up a cliff that stood at a 90 degree angle – a tiny dirt path cluttered with potholes, small boulders, and other potential deaths to the motorcyclist. I had to walk, as he was sure should I be on the back neither he, me, nor the motorcycle would make it back out.

Once at the top it was as perfect as he had said it would be. A field in an open clearing, surrounded by forest in the Tatar mountains, and a view that promised a spectacular sunset and sunrise. Exactly what we searched for when we camp wild. Yet I couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong. I decided to chalk it up to the fact I had not camped wild in over a year, and that was messing with my feelings.

Up goes the tent, out comes the food. I had no sooner torn open my chocolate bar when Patrick declares “I hope there are no bears here.” He had no sooner declared it when we heard a snort, a pant and a growl. My insides liquefied and my stomach slid into my shoes. “Oh FUCK Its a BEAR!” and I jump up and almost crying I beg him to go. Patrick on the other hand is insistent its not. “Maybe its just a mad or horny cow.”

Yes Patrick, in the middle of the woods in the Tatar mountains, prime bear country and making noises that a cow with rabies wouldn’t make. When he snorts and snuffs again and I cry BEAR BEAR BEAR and Patrick wound up and let the food bag fly.

I then want to pack up and get the fuck out of dodge. Patrick however is thinking that maybe now the bear wont come back. Why waste such a wonderful camping spot. I am Canadian. Terror stories of bears that used tents as trampolines (be these stories true or not) are enough to make me say SCREW that. My description of a mauling by a bear and my tearful insistence that we leave NOW and leave everything we had as well had Patrick almost convinced. That we then hear the bear growl and snort on its way back to devour us pushed him over the edge and he immediately revs up the bike engine to scare our unwelcome predator away.

That was the fastest time we have ever broke camp.

Nevertheless a new big adventure has begun. Probably the biggest of our lives. No, we are not flying to the moon (although one day we might) nor are we taking a canoe down the Amazon in order to find some exotic indigenous tribe.

Its seems much simpler but will be probably way more complicated. But it started simple at least. That was almost at the end of our last world trip, in Newfoundland. Now nine months later the result is finally here:

PS: Yes I know Emma was the name of the bike I rode on my first big motorcycle trip. I still think it’s a good name . I kind of grew used to it. Besides, it’s also the one of her great grandma.
